At Huisman Family Dentistry, we provide expert Holland TMJ treatment options designed to address the root cause of your discomfort and deliver long-lasting relief. By focusing on precise diagnosis and individualized care, we help you achieve a smile that looks as good as it feels—without relying on painkillers to mask the symptoms.
Customized TMJ Treatment Plans
TMJ disorders vary greatly from patient to patient, and so does the treatment. Once we’ve diagnosed your TMJ condition, measured your bite, and established its ideal position, we develop a personalized, non-invasive treatment plan that balances form and function.
What Does TMJ Treatment Involve?
Our treatment approach may include:
- Bite Adjustment: Fine-tuning the alignment of your teeth to reduce strain and improve function.
- Orthotic Appliances: Custom devices designed to support the jaw and promote optimal alignment.
- Therapeutic Techniques: Strategies to relieve tension in the jaw muscles and encourage natural, pain-free movement.
Our treatments are tailored to your unique needs, ensuring effective relief and a natural, harmonious smile.

Which treatment suits which problem
TMJ is a group of problems rather than one condition, and the right treatment depends on which is driving your pain. Clenching and grinding at night usually responds to a custom night guard. A bite that no longer meets evenly may need equilibration, restorative work, or orthodontic movement. Joint inflammation from injury or arthritis is managed differently again, often starting with anti-inflammatories, heat and a soft diet before anything is made. Muscle spasm in the jaw and temples frequently comes with headaches, which is why migraine sufferers are often referred to a dentist.
How we work out which it is
Diagnosis comes before treatment. We take a history of when the pain started and what makes it worse, examine and palpate the joint and the muscles around it, measure how far the jaw opens and whether it deviates, check for clicking and locking, and look at the wear pattern on your teeth. Imaging is used where the joint itself needs to be seen. Our TMJ diagnosis page explains the process, and the symptoms of TMJ lists what to look out for.
Night guards and splints
A custom-made appliance is the most common starting point because it is reversible and it protects the teeth while the muscles settle. A guard made from an impression of your own teeth fits and loads differently from a boil-and-bite bought at a pharmacy. Can a dental splint or mouthguard really help with TMJ pain? covers when it works and when it does not, and what happens if you do not wear one covers the cost of leaving it.
What relief usually looks like
Most patients notice less morning tightness within a few weeks rather than a few days, and headaches tend to ease before the clicking does. Some clicking never fully disappears, and that is acceptable as long as the joint is not painful or locking. We review at intervals, adjust the appliance as the bite settles, and only move to more involved treatment if the conservative approach has been given a fair trial. If grinding is the underlying driver, our bruxism treatment page explains the wider plan, and the truth behind teeth grinding covers the causes.
