How Does Laser Dentistry Work?
Dental lasers use focused light energy to precisely target and vaporize soft tissues in your mouth. This advanced technology promotes healing as it works, resulting in minimal bleeding, no need for stitches, and faster recovery times. Treatments are gentle and comfortable, making laser dentistry a preferred option for many procedures.
Are Lasers Safe?
Yes, dental lasers are highly safe and accurate. They precisely deliver energy to targeted areas without affecting surrounding tissues, making them ideal for delicate procedures. Lasers are trusted for sensitive treatments, including eye surgeries and even in-utero procedures. Rest assured, our team is laser-certified, ensuring you receive expert care.

What we use the laser for
The laser is a tool rather than a treatment in its own right, and it earns its place in a handful of specific procedures. It removes and reshapes inflamed gum tissue during periodontal treatment, contours the gumline in cosmetic cases, releases a tight frenum, treats cold sores and ulcers, and disinfects a periodontal pocket after scaling. Because it seals small blood vessels as it works, the same procedure often means less bleeding and less swelling afterwards than a blade would produce. Our gum disease treatment page and gum recontouring page cover the two most common uses.
Laser gum disease treatment
In moderate to advanced periodontal disease, the pocket between tooth and gum harbours bacteria that a toothbrush cannot reach. Scaling and root planing cleans the root surface; the laser then treats the soft tissue lining of the pocket. Patients generally report less discomfort during and after the appointment than with surgical approaches, and the tissue tends to reattach more comfortably. Advanced periodontal care with lasers explains the approach, and the early signs of gum disease covers what to watch for before it gets that far.
What treatment feels like
Most laser work on soft tissue needs only local anaesthetic, and some minor procedures need none at all. There is no drill noise and no vibration, which matters to nervous patients. Afterwards the treated area may feel tender for a day or two and we will normally ask you to keep to soft food and rinse with warm salt water. Sutures are often unnecessary because the tissue seals as it is cut.
Who it suits and who it does not
Laser treatment suits soft-tissue work, early to moderate gum disease and cosmetic contouring. It does not replace a filling, a crown or an extraction, and advanced bone loss still needs conventional periodontal surgery or a referral. At your examination we will tell you plainly whether the laser is the right instrument for your case or simply the more marketable one. If gum recession is your concern, all about gum recession and why gums recede are worth reading first.
